WWE Hell in a Cell is on the horizon with the return of the infamous and unforgiving 20ft high steel structure.

The superstars of Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live will be in action during a four-hour pay-per-view event.

Thirty seven Hell in a Cell matches have been held since the unique bout first took place in WWE back in 1997.

At least three more are expected to take place this year - but can The Undertaker epic bout versus Mick Foley ever be topped?

What about The Kickoff pre-show?

Presenter extraordinaire Renee Young and a panel of WWE greats and pundits will break down all the action to come during the Hell in a Cell Kickoff pre-show. No matches have been confirmed for the build-up slot so far, but there will likely be at least two contests.

What is the main event?

At SummerSlam, Roman Reigns finally defeated Brock Lesnar to win the Universal Championship. Beforehand, Money in the Bank briefcase holder Braun Strowman declared he would cash-in on the winner, but he was incapacitated by Lesnar, preventing him from cashing in and providing a distraction allowing Reigns to triumph.

The next night on Raw, he again attempted to cash-in, but was stopped by Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins coming to the aid of Reigns, reforming The Shield. The following week, Braun confronted Roman and announced he would cash-in at Hell in a Cell, theoretically so Ambrose and Rollins couldn't interfere. But that wasn't enough for the challenger, so to even the numbers he joined forces with Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre, who beat down the trio.

Oh, and as if that wasn't enough, the man who made Hell in a Cell famous, Mick Foley, will be the special guest referee!

What about the women's championships?

Ronda Rousey won the Raw Women's Championship from Alexa Bliss at SummerSlam, who has since announced she will be invoking her championship rematch clause at Hell in a Cell.

As for Charlotte Flair and the SmackDown Women's Championship, Becky Lynch made her intentions very clear by turning on her former best friend last month, after Charlotte bested her and former champion Carmella in a triple threat match. Now the Irish Lasskicker will challenge The Queen one-on-one.

Will there be tag team title matches?

On the September 3 episode of Raw, Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre defeated The B-Team to win the Raw Tag Team Championship. Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel failed to reclaim the belts in their rematch, so now Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins step up to the plate in a continuation of the main event rivalry between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman.

The New Day defeated The Bludgeon Brothers in a No Disqualification match on SmackDown to capture their third SmackDown Tag Team Championship. The show's general manager Paige then scheduled two triple threat matches, with the winners facing each other to determine who wouild challenge The New Day at Hell in a Cell. Cesaro and Sheamus won their first match but were defeated by Rusev and Aiden English, after they edged out The Usos and Sanity.

What are the other key matches on the card?

AJ Styles and Samoa Joe's deeply personal feud continues after a SummerSlam match when Joe taunted Styles by disrespecting his wife and daughter. An irate Styles attacked Joe with a steel chair, resulting in Joe winning by disqualification, but Styles retaining the WWE Championship. On the following SmackDown, Joe attacked Styles from behind during an interview, and continued to disrespect Styles' family, before a rematch between the two for the title was scheduled for Hell in a Cell.

At SummerSlam, The Miz defeated Daniel Bryan after Miz's wife Maryse gave him a pair of brass knuckles, which the referee did not see. On the next SmackDown, Miz and Maryse mocked Bryan's retirement speech from two years earlier, prompting Bryan and his wife Brie Bella to confront them. Now all four will clash in a mixed tag match.

At Backlash, Jeff Hardy retained the United States Championship against Randy Orton. But at Extreme Rules, after Hardy lost the title to Shinsuke Nakamura, Orton made his return to WWE and attacked him. More attacks by RKO followed, before Hardy lost his rematch against Nakamura at SummerSlam. Since then The Viper and the Charismatic Enigma have battled back and forth and now the two old rivals will square off inside Hell in a Cell.

Are there likely to be any surprise appearances?

It's been a long time since we've seen The Undertaker in action, but he's set to face Triple H in what is being billed as their last ever match at WWE Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia on October 6. Could he warm up for that bout with an appearance at the event featuring the match he and Mick Foley made famous?
